Do you know where the Building Stairs are?

Last week I attended the Tin House Writers Workshop in Portland, OR. It involved morning workshops (every participant submits a piece of writing and the rest of the group critiques), afternoon seminars, and faculty readings in the evenings. So it was intense, and as a co-worker pointed out I basically elected to spend my vacation going to school… But as well as being hard work, it was extremely rewarding - after writing in various forms for years, it was great to be able to spend a week really focused on the craft of writing.
The faculty included some oustanding writers - Denis Johnson, Dorothy Allison, Aimee Bender, Peter Rock and others - so the teaching was of an impressively high standard, and the faculty readings were a real treat. Tin House publishes a quarterly literary magazine that I think is one of the best out there (that’s why I went to their workshop!) so check it out at your local bookstore.
Incidentally, someone asked me the other day how I make time for all these extra-curricular activities, with the writing, and the online literary journal (www.wazeejournal.org), and the music (www.alltunators.com)… I think it’s actually pretty simple: I don’t watch TV.
The average American watches 4 hours of TV a day. That’s 2 months of nonstop TV watching every year. That’s a lot of time, people!
I have always had a fondness for your particular restaurant chain, I think it goes back to my high school wrestling days when I would always eat a foot long Cold Cut Combo, mayo only, after each weigh in. That particular sandwich always hits the spot, and was there for me through some tough times.
Being located on 16th street in downtown Denver, my fellow employees and I enjoy a wealth of tasty lunch choices within close walking distance. Despite the multitude of choices, your restaurant is pretty much the closest and a quick way to get a good meal. I usually bring my lunch these days, but when I don’t you’re usually at the top of a short list.
I’d like to take a minute today to remember Olive Riley, known as the world’s oldest living blogger, who passed away over the weekend. I am greatly impressed with her ability and desire to master computer skills at 107 years of age and regularly post on her personal blog right up until she died. I know that new technology used to scare me, and I can only imagine how much has changed during her lifetime and how intimidating a computer might have been for her. I applaud Olive for taking on the challenge and adding her wonderful insight and good nature to the world.
Today’s happy song is for Olive, such a great cheerleader for blogging around the world!
The Alltunators played at the Denver Art Museum on Friday, as part of the monthly “Untitled” event . The last Friday of every month, the DAM hosts what they call a “mixed media” event, and on this occasion the theme was thread. We really weren’t sure what to expect, but it was a lot of fun. My favorite item was the theatrical performance in the freight elevator, in which three people in swimsuits performed a sequence of short scenes, riffing on the thread idea in an impressively surreal way… I can say with confidence it was the best performance in a freight elevator I’ve ever seen! There were also delicious snacks, beer and wine. All round a great event, and for me, the first time in the new Frederick C. Hamilton building - exciting to see the space being used so creatively, and to see the arts are alive and kicking in Denver!
