I just learned a painful lesson…… Ryan Holder

Never, ever, use an iframe in IE 6 with the src set to an empty string: iframe src=”"

This works fine on non-secure pages but, once its https, you will get security popups. Of course the reason I was even using an iframe was to get around the bug in IE 6 where dropdown/selects bleed through any content floating above it (a.k.a. div over shim hack). So my fix for IE 6 caused even more IE 6 issues….. Good grief!

Why is the site so slow? Ryan Holder

Friday, July 25th, 2008

There is a nice tool out there that builds on the firebug plug-in to help diagnose slow web pages. It is called YSlow and it is available on Yahoo. This tool gives a report card on various aspects of the web page under scrutiny. Aspects such as the number of http requests, duplicate JavaScript, weather or not the JavaScript on the page is minimized and gzipped, css analysis, number of domain names used on the page (each requires a dns lookup), etc. Here is the list of items it scores:

IE6 - Standalone Ryan Holder

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

I (like most) downloaded and installed a “Standalone” version of IE6 only to discover that it isn’t completely standalone. Most installs of this type are hacks that still use IE7 for parts of it. With all the various issues I discovered while using my IE6 install, I decided to search the web to find a better solution. I came across Microsoft’s page where, they are offering an activated XP SP2 IE6 Virtual PC image: click here Also, this page has Virtual PC images for IE7 and IE8-Beta.

So go and get it! It works a whole lot better but beware, the image expires in September. So, hurry up! Virtual PC is free, so no excuses. The vpc image has the IE Developer Toolbar and script debugger installs right on the desktop.

Install:

In Virtual PC, create a new virtual pc instance and add the downloaded/extracted virtual hard drive (.vhd) to it.

Human Powered MowerLast month I paid $400 for a lawn mower that felt like it was going to break the minute I started using it. I have had several mowers over the years (from a $200 Craftsman to an $800 Honda) and the all stink! In a fit of frustration, I took my “awesome” mower back and bought a non-gas powered reel mower ($130). I have got to say this is the best mower I have ever used. I was able to cut my lawn in less time and best of all, NO GAS!!!!!!!

My wife and I already use washable diapers and we are looking into getting solar panels for our house. My new human powered mower is just one more addition to our green lifestyle.

P.S. For those South Park fans out there, you don’t need to worry about any smug clouds. I still have three gas guzzling cars. :)
