Yay FireFox 3….now go get 2 back Dana Costello

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Ok so yes, I went and got my FireFox 3 yesterday but of course, we’re web devolopers, so we need to keep testing our stuff in FireFox 2.  Many of us have the standalone IE 6 on our machines which, while very useful, is also horrifying.  Luckily both FireFoxes can be run on the machine without messing each other up and with minimal effort.  Following these simple steps:

1.  Open up a command prompt

2. Navigate to your Firefox usually: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox” (unless you’re tricky and put it somewhere else)

3. Run this command: firefox -profilemanager -no-remote

4. this link (provided by Cris) http://www.teamhackaday.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2843 has pictures.

5.  In the popup Firefox – Choose your profile click “Create Profile”… enter a new profile name mine is called “FIreFox2″ (yours could be called “SunshineAndCandyBars”)

6.  Click the finish button and exit out of the FireFox popup.

7. Go get Firefox 2 (if you haven’t upgraded yet you could alternatively get firefox 3 but then you’d want your profile name to be FireFox3 or “TubbsAndCrockett”) I like this link for FireFox2 http://www.filehippo.com/download_firefox/4038/ cause i can’t find it anymore on Mozilla

8. I Only installed a desktop Shortcut and installed the old FireFox2 in this Folder: Mozilla Firefox 2 Old

9. Go find your shortcut right click on it and select Properties:

10. For the field entitled start in: “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2 Old”  For the Field entitled Target: “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2 Old\firefox.exe” -P FireFox2 -no-remote

Your Target woud be “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2 Old\firefox.exe” -P TubbsAndCrockett -no-remote

Seriously the link I gave you above has pictures maybe you should look at that instead of reading this…

Top 5 Most Hated Keys on the Keyboard Dana Costello

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

As a software engineer, your most useful tool for communicating with your computer is your keyboard. Probably followed in close second by your monitor. (Note this is the sole opinion of the author of this article…which is correct). So in considering my keyboard, I came up with things I hate because I am filled with rage and sugar. So without further ado, I present:

The Top 5 Most Hated (and dare I say, feared?) Keys on the Keyboard

5. The “Insert” key.
How many times have you gone to hit the delete key and pressed the insert key by accident? All you wanted to do was erase that extra “e” that you end up putting at the end of like every worde and put in a sentence about necessary data types and all of a sudden, you’re typing all willy-nilly over some system requirement. Ridiculous.

4. The “Insert” key. Read the rest of this entry »

Way Back on the Web Dana Costello

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

I’m kicking it old school for my first blog post. Also, I’m kicking butt…Ben’s butt…on Googlefight. That’s right, supposedly the domain was registered way back in 2002, but according to Google Trends, the site hit the general public in 2005. So I’m reminding us all of a simple time, when all one could do for entertainment was to watch two stick figures battle for a taller bar on a two bar graph. Googlefight just Googles two keywords and gives you the number of search results for each word. The one with the most hits is the winner. In the case below, Keyword #1 and still champion is myself, Dana Costello and keyword #2, less cool, is Ben Kaely. But back to butt-kicking. This is my version of the fight…or a 5-year-old’s, as we have the same level of drawing skill. (click the picture to go to the real fight) I Win googlefight To make your own fights for hilariousness and bragging rights go to GoogleFight. You know if you’ve never heard of it…or if you were too young to hear about it the first time or if you forgot about it.
