Donut call me a hero Brandon Hess

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Indigio - Donuts and Domo not includedFact: I get a gold star every time I use a pun in a title.  Crazy.

But on a serious note, I will accept no more thank you cards, donations or statues for my actions today in defending Indigio against a certain, delicious invasion of donuts initiated by the malicious (yet benevolent) Ronnie Guidry.  While I fully admit that my eating nearly half a box of donuts in eight hours is undeniably epic, and the fact that I can’t tell if William Shatner actually asked me to get coffee with him just a second ago or if it’s a sugar-hallucination,  I would do so again without hesitation.

Keep that in mind if anyone else is planning any other sort of desert or pastry themed invasion, you know, tomorrow, perhaps with hostile cinnamon rolls or diabolical brownies.

Or dastardly lemon bars…

Google aquires Doubleclick. Microhoo on the horizon? Brandon Hess

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

As I’ve noticed the large amount of news stories focused on the acquisition of Double-Click by Google, I’d guess that you’re not reading upon this entry with a large amount of surprise. However, something as monumental as the world’s largest search giant acquiring, arguably, the world’s largest online-display giant, is something to take some note of. Not only will the combination of a powerful Search and Display team add to the staggering portfolio that is Google, this acquisition could do much more than simply transform Google into a very powerful online-advertising platform.

It might be just the spark Microsoft needed to make their offer to acquire Yahoo all the more inviting. After all, Yahoo’s always had the edge that they held both a recognized and trusted Search brand along with a strong Display platform and while their market-share in the Search market is second by a large margin to Google, they held a powerful combination for those interested in a one-stop platform for both Search and Display advertising. With someone with the momentum and steam such as Google now fighting in both rings, I wouldn’t be surprised if Yahoo’s stance on Microsoft’s subtle wooing quickly became much more welcoming.

SMX West – Day 3 – Online and Offline Brandon Hess

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

There’s a big realization when you’re seperated from the day-to-day that becomes somewhat rythmic and throw yourself into a large pool of professionals concentrated on the same industry.  It’s not to be compared with throwing a wrench in the gears but really, it gives you the opportunity to broaden at such a pace that if you don’t take inventory of it, it might steam by without allowing you to take in how much can happen in a short amount of time.

To write a summary of everything presented to me, both new ideas and the affirmation of old ones, I’d most likely need to learn how to summarize better.  The overlying themes that seemed to flow between every conversation I’ve had over the last three days, now that’s something I can attempt to convey in a summarized version.  After all, with all this attention around being green, I’d hate to lay waste to the digital forests with reckless abandon.

Search Engine Marketing is not a magic potion

I think this point is something that is a rule of thumb for every marketing option available currently.  Marketers and those in the industry of helping their brand sell things have long been cursed with tunnel vision.   Read the rest of this entry »

SMX West – Day 2 – Cross-domain Sitemap Announcement Brandon Hess

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Lots of useful information, lots bouncing around my brain like a superball in an old Victorian home, shattering antique lamps without mercy.  I’ll make sure to post about that soon.

Really though, the most interesting thing right now is that thy merciful Search Engines are changing how Sitemaps work, to benefit us.  Instead of forcing sitemaps to be hierarchal to the site it exists upon, sitemaps can now be cross-domain to allow sites with multiple domain suites (ex: www.denverpost.com, www.postnewsclassfieds.com) to more simply allow Search Engines index their sitemaps by using a singular file location.  There’s some new rules to it (ex: Maximum size for a sitemap uncompressed is 10mb) that they haven’t covered yet but then again, I just sat down for an SEO Q&A with representatives from Google, Yahoo, Live and Ask.

Good times.

SMX West – Day 1 Brandon Hess

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

As I write this post, I’m awaiting to hear a Keynote Speech on Search 3.0 by Dave Sullivan, the first of three Keynotes here at Search Marketing Expo West in Santa Clara California.  You might consider me amazing that I can be posting on our blog whilst I sit in a large conference room while the song Dani California echoes around meSMX Logo, but I assure you, the internet here in California is quite wireless.

I arrived yesterday, a day before the official SMX West began and had a chance last night to mingle with some of the other participants in this year’s festivities.  As I passed out a forest-worth of business cards, replying to questions regarding my NBA ambitions and the realization that I’m what some people refer to as tall, I was somewhat astounded by the sheer amount of diverse companies and industries attending a Search Marketing Expo.  Uttering the phrase Search Marketing Expo brings to mind people dressed in their best black turtlenecks, lugging around silver iBooks, their communication buried deeply in jargon and business cards referring to their positions within Web Development and Search Media agencies.

Oddly enough, the majority of people I’ve met neither work in the Web Development or Search Media industry.  The majority of people I met last night are here Read the rest of this entry »
