A State For Change
June 27th, 2008
We all have goals and plans for the near future: having kids, traveling around the world or moving to a new city. Regardless of these thoughts, the question of what that future will look like and how we can sustain it is the most important plan of all.Sustainable Development has become a heated topic of debate in recent years as issues surrounding global warming arise and gas prices soar. The idea is to keep in mind that environmental protection does not preclude economic development and that economic development must be ecologically viable now and in the long run. It was projected that the world would hit “Peak Oil” in 1970; meaning 50% of the world’s oil would be tapped out, today this may very well be true as the era of cheap gas has come and gone.
Did You Know? The world is expected to grow by 80 million people each year
Colorado is one of the most forward thinking states in the nation with projects such as RTD/Fast Tracks and Xcel Energy, the nations leader in renewable energy. Westfield’s development of 1880 Larimer is a revolutionary building that will reuse 90% of the previous building materials. ProLogis, a developer of distribution facilities worldwide, is working to make buildings certified as Leaders in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). However, Denver International Airport proved to be the most innovative presence at the event. As the leader in sustainable development, DIA continues to push initiatives that promote sustainable development. They have designed an Environmental Management System to enforce their programs, which includes onsite glycol recycling facilities, solid waste recycling, alternatively fueled vehicles and electricity and preconditioned air supplied to 100% of the gates.
These organizations are setting the stage for the development needed to protect the longevity of the environment, proving sustainable practices cannot only help the environment but improve business performance and efficiency.
The Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce recently held an event presented by Centura Health on Going Green and the future of sustainable design. Panelists from Denver International Airport, ProLogis, and Westfield Development shared insight into the need for sustainable development and how their unique initiatives and comprehensive focus on environmental responsibility are making strides and improving their overall business.
