IE6 – Standalone
June 19th, 2008I (like most) downloaded and installed a “Standalone” version of IE6 only to discover that it isn’t completely standalone. Most installs of this type are hacks that still use IE7 for parts of it. With all the various issues I discovered while using my IE6 install, I decided to search the web to find a better solution. I came across Microsoft’s page where, they are offering an activated XP SP2 IE6 Virtual PC image: click here Also, this page has Virtual PC images for IE7 and IE8-Beta.
So go and get it! It works a whole lot better but beware, the image expires in September. So, hurry up! Virtual PC is free, so no excuses. The vpc image has the IE Developer Toolbar and script debugger installs right on the desktop.
Install:
In Virtual PC, create a new virtual pc instance and add the downloaded/extracted virtual hard drive (.vhd) to it.

I thought I would throw this link out there. I have used it in the past to do some testing in IE6 versus IE7. It worked great for me (even put the different icons on my desktop as part of the download); however, who knows if it was really using some of IE7 on the back-end. If this is not what you tried before, might be worth looking into.

Actually, that is the standalone IE6 install I used. The problem with it is that its not truly standalone….. I could not get IE developer toolbar to work in it, Google.com/ig throws a JavaScript error in this hacked version (which prevents any Google gadgets from working), etc….
The biggest problem is that a client will email me a bug they see in IE 6 and when I would try to reproduce it, I never could. This is because the multi IE install uses IE7 for parts of it and the bug(s) don’t happen in IE 7.

I’ve also had weird issues with my IE6 standalone – the most annoying problem is that when I try to go to a “favorite” I am given the print dialog box instead of sending me to the URL.
Does anyone know any way around this other than having a vpc with IE6 installed?
