Remembering the Web: 1998
April 27th, 2008This past Friday, a few of us from Indigio joined Brian Vogt, Robin Doerr and Doris Boardman from the Denver Botanic Gardens for lunch. Brian asked a question that spawned a great discussion – When we think back on how much has changed in the past 10 years, where will be in the next 10?
The first thoughts that came to my mind was where the industry was 10 years ago. A few memories:
- Netscape Navigator was the most widely used browser.
- AltaVista was the search engine of choice for geeks (at least the geeks I hung out with).
- Google was just forming as an experiment at Stanford University.
- We all had hotmail accounts.
- Steve Jobs came back to Apple and released the first iMac (I am still hitting myself for not buying stock – though I did buy an iMac, in purple).
- The idea of a tableless layout without spacer.gif’s seemed pretty far off.
In 10 years, massive global brands have been formed (and many, unformed); entirely new ways to interact with music, videos, stories and people have been formed. So, when we’re asked to think about where the Web will be in 10 years, it’s a tough question.
I just hope Tom still has a candy jar in our office. With Kit Kats.
