CSIA Event – CIO Survey Trends
April 23rd, 2008I had the opportunity this morning to attend a CSIA event called CIO Survey Trends Breakfast. The CIO survey, conducted by KPMG and Harvey Nash, provided some interesting insight into the state of IT these days. After a top line review of the Survey Results, the panel put together by CSIA did a great job discussing what they are experiencing in their businesses. The panel consisted of the follow IT Leaders:
- Michael Casullo, CIO, Wild Blue Communications
- John Heveran, Senior Vice President IT, Level 3
- Micki Nelson, CIO, MWH Global
- Jim Lubinski, Senior VP of Operations and Information Technology, Western Union
Some interesting things from the survey:
- 58% of IT Workers report working more than 50 hours per week with the majority, 46%, working between 50-60 hours per week.
- 40% of IT Workers expect to be in a new job within 2 years.
- 77% of IT Workers expect to be in a new job within 5 years.
A large portion of the discussion and survey centered around things like IT and Business Alignment, Outsourcing, Offshoring, and Staffing. Some interesting thoughts from the various panel members:
- Jim said partnerships with outsource companies allow him access to newer technologies.
- Jim believes the fear of offshoring has contributed to the decline college graduates with IT related degrees.
- Micki feels that the Business is often unaware of IT’s capabilities.
- John said that fear of losing key people keeps him awake at night.
The event was well attended and everyone left with a better sense of what is going on in our industry globally as well as within Colorado.
