Selecting The Perfect Merger Partner Is A Lot Like Selecting A Prom Date Dave Langley

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Who am I?I am finding that selecting the perfect merger partner is a lot like selecting a prom date. Thinking back to my high school daze..uh…that is days, I remember that there were lots of girls that I could have asked to the prom. When I started seriously thinking about prom, I remember my first thought was that I needed to ask someone fast. Get it locked down. That is the goal, right? To make sure you have a prom date. My thought process was something like this. Okay, who to take? How about her? Or maybe her? Or maybe…wow, this is serious. There are a lot of girls in this school. I can’t just ask the first one that comes along because what if a better date presents itself. And I can’t really imagine taking two girls to the prom at the same time. While interesting, it would divide my focus and probably wouldn’t turn out well. I should take some time and think about this. Make sure I ask the right girl. Do I ask a girl I know well and have built a friendship with or do I ask I girl that I don’t know but that I think I am attracted to? Do I ask someone from a different school? Do I ask a senior? Junior? Sophomore? Unbelievable how many options there are. I definitely want to go with someone that I will get along with. Girls everywhere. So many options.

So I started to prepare a mental list of girls I knew and girls I wish I knew and even fantasy girls I had not yet met. My list was in order of which girls I would like to go to the prom with the most. I then had to apply some simple filtering. Which girls did I actually have a chance with? There went the fantasy options. And the head cheerleader. And…well let’s just say the list got a little shorter. Now that I had a solid list I was free to ask…hey…what is that other guy doing? He is asking a girl on my list. What!?!? Someone beat me to punch. And then I started to panic about who else might ask the rest of the available girls before I got to them. I mean, even if I was a better option, would a girl that had said yes to someone else now go back and tell her prom date that she changed her mind so she could go with me. What would that say about the girl? So confusing.

Now the funny part about this was that it didn’t really hit me that the girls were doing some thinking of their own. Before panic set in, I just kind of figured they were waiting patiently for me to ask. I am betting their thought process went something like this. Do I even want to go to prom? I guess it depends on who asks me? Do I want to go with a friend or am I holding out for the captain of the football team? What if someone I don’t know asks me? What if someone from a different school asks me? If someone asks and they are okay but not ideal, do I say yes? What am I really looking for in a prom date? Do I ask someone? Oh the options.

And they started to mentally create their own list of possibilities.

Now it is a matter of timing and luck. Can you ask the right girl at the right time? Ask too early and she is likely going to hedge her bet and potentially wait for a better offer. Ask too late and well it is too late. Panic and ask the wrong girl and then you will likely have regrets. It is really a wonder that anyone actually goes to the prom… other than Becki and Tom.

Well, prom is approaching for Indigio. I can definitely tell you that we are going. I guess the question remains, with who?

On the train ride into Indigio, I read an interesting story on CNN.  A Grad Student used twitter to free himself from an Egyptian jail.

If you have not heard about this story it is worth a read.

Remembering the Web: 1998 Becki Dilworth

    Sunday, April 27th, 2008

This past Friday, a few of us from Indigio joined Brian Vogt, Robin Doerr and Doris Boardman from the Denver Botanic Gardens for lunch. Brian asked a question that spawned a great discussion - When we think back on how much has changed in the past 10 years, where will be in the next 10?

The first thoughts that came to my mind was where the industry was 10 years ago. A few memories:

    • Netscape Navigator was the most widely used browser.
    • AltaVista was the search engine of choice for geeks (at least the geeks I hung out with).
    • Google was just forming as an experiment at Stanford University.
    • We all had hotmail accounts.
    • Steve Jobs came back to Apple and released the first iMac (I am still hitting myself for not buying stock - though I did buy an iMac, in purple).
    • The idea of a tableless layout without spacer.gif’s seemed pretty far off.

In 10 years, massive global brands have been formed (and many, unformed); entirely new ways to interact with music, videos, stories and people have been formed. So, when we’re asked to think about where the Web will be in 10 years, it’s a tough question.

I just hope Tom still has a candy jar in our office. With Kit Kats.

Indigio to Sponsor SNA Interactive Media Conference Teresa Lawlor

    Saturday, April 26th, 2008

SNA Logo  Indigio is proud to be a sponsor of the Suburban Newspaper Association’s Interactive Media Symposium in Vegas - part of the Editor and Publisher’s Interactive Media Conference on May 13th. The SNA is the home to 2400 local newspapers and this one-day symposium is sure to deliver great ideas and market-specific information for these suburban and community markets.

I will be representing Indigio and am anxious to meet the 90 or more newspaper decision makers that have already signed up to attend. During my tenure at MediaNews Group Interactive I saw the smaller local markets become increasingly more profitable and begin to develop a more loyal audience than some of its larger local markets. It will be interesting to compare stories and hear from these folks what successes and challenges they face.

The meeting features a great agenda that includes speakers from Borrell Associates, the Bakerfield Californian and Lawrence Journal World. Timely topics (that Indigio sure knows a few things about) include building your own marketplace, social networking and search marketing. I am looking forward to sharing our extensive experience in the newspaper industry as well as our successes in driving audience engagement in the search marketing space. (Plus its only my second time in Vegas!)

In the next few days I will be emailing attendees to introduce myself and to schedule appointments at the conference. If you happen to be out there in Vegas for this conference and would like to meet don’t hesitate to contact me at tlawlor@indigio.com.

Today, CSIA - Colorado’s Technology Association announced companies and individuals nominated for the 8th annual CSIA Apex Awards.  Indigio was nominated in the corporate category and Becki Dilworth was nominated in the individuals category.  This is the largest annual technology award event in Colorado, so this is very exciting.

“The nominated companies represent the leaders of Colorado’s technology industry,” said Barbara Bauer, co-chair of the 2008 CSIA Apex Awards. “It’s important to recognize the achievements made in our state, as well as the people behind the successes.” “These nominees - as well as the guests - represent the innovation and business success of technology in Colorado,” Jackie Walden, co-chair of the 2008 CSIA Apex Awards added.

A full description of the categories is available at CSIA’s Web site at www.coloradotechnology.org.  The winners will be announced on June 5th at the Apex Awards event.

I personally am very proud to be a part of a company recognized and I am especially happy my friend and co-worker Becki is being honored.  Becki is truly deserving as she is an industry leader and is one of the reasons for Indigio’s success.  Good luck Becki!
