Colorado’s Newest Lake Located Close to I-25: Boat Permits On Sale This Saturday Tom Whittaker

February 8th, 2008

20080208_012250_highway_300.jpgIf you live in the Denver area, you know the top news story right now – the sink hole on I-25. For those readers who are not from the area, yesterday a large sink hole formed on our busiest highway and shut down northbound traffic and created a huge headache for many commuters.

However, the way the television news is reacting, you would have thought aliens landed on I-25 and started shooting up the place. But news is news. However I do feel it is a bit of a black eye on Denver Water and the State of Colorado. The hole was caused by a water conduit that leaked and spilled 2 million gallons of water yesterday. The hole 40 feet across and 16 feet deep and fortunately nobody was hurt. Think what may have happened it this occurred overnight. I am sure several people would have been injured or killed.

However, I think the State should turn this negative into a positive by launching some clever campaigns to divert attention from the fact that one of our highways slipped 16 feet down. Here are my suggestions:

1. Mother Nature’s Speed Bump: Even She Thinks You All Drive Too Fast. Slow Down!

2. Sink Hole 2008: Colorado’s Primary Coverage

3. Government Cover-up: Aliens Attack I-25

4. Hundreds of New Jobs Created for I-25 Reconstruction

5. Denver Water Cutting Edge: Launches New Aquatic Highway

And my personal favorite:

6. Colorado’s Newest Lake Located Close to I-25: Boat Permits On Sale This Saturday

I think that is the problem with state and government agencies is that they do not know how to spin accidents like this. They need to hire quick acting PR firms if you ask me.

Please feel free to post your comments with suggestions here for other creative marketing campaigns to take attention off the big hole in the road.
