Indigian becomes internet authority on random subject Wayne Rodgers

I hate to brag, but if you’re looking at drywalling an I-Beam in your basement, the world authority might be right down the hall. No, it’s not Bob Vila. That’s right, an article I wrote on my blog about drywalling over an ibeam has attained the #1 spot in Google for search terms that include “drywall Ibeam”, “drywalling Ibeam” “drywalling an Ibeam”, “drywalling i-beam” and the like. People all over the world who would like to drywall in their basements but can’t figure out how to drywall over I-beams can now breathe a sigh of relief, because I tell them how. There are others describing the process, but Google seems to think that I’m the best (at least for a few select keywords).

Okay, so maybe it isn’t that popular of a search term. It seems like a lot of people would need this information, but my blog seems to be keeping up with the traffic just fine and I’m sure there isn’t a server smoking somewhere. However, my blog articles seem to be ranking pretty high in a wide range of subjects (several in the first page), even for searches that have pretty general home improvement keywords.

The point I’m trying to make with all of this bragging is about the power of blogging. One month ago I started my DIY home improvement blog Howsed.com by investing an hour a day of my time. Today I’ve got articles ranking on the first page of Google right next to those written by Bob Vila, the This Old House crew, and the like. That’s pretty crazy! There is no way other than through blogging that my articles could show up in the same place as those guys.

No, I’m not making any money doing this, but I enjoy writing the articles and creating diagrams of my work with simple photoshop skills. However, I can’t help but think that if I owned a business, perhaps a construction business, the kind of exposure that my blog could bring one day would be extremely valuable and would bring in tons of business.

It appears that if you create a blog and post regularly on a particular subject that you know about, whatever that may be, you can become seen as an authority on the subject in short order (at least in Google’s eyes). As an individual blogger such as myself, you might not be able to take advantage of the Google position and exposure that a blog can bring, but we at Indigio have a wide range of clients that could benefit from blogging about their area of expertise and reaping the financial benefits of the authority status that they can develop.

I think this whole blogging thing is going to get big. If a little guy like me can easily get ranked up in the top spot in Google on a subject, the big guys are going to have to start blogging just to keep up.

    Your last paragraph sums it up perfectly. And I’m glad your beating out Bob Vila in the search engines. People need to retire. And its about time someone took his place.

    I obsess over my Google analytics every morning for my train blog reviewing the data to try and understand how I am doing SEO wise. Recently, I have experienced some significant drops for various keywords after initially getting some great first page positioning. I am by no means an SEO expert nor will I play one on this blog but it requires constant care and feeding to be and stay relevant from my limited experience. Perhaps some of our SEO guru’s might weigh in.

    One thing I would definitely take a look at though (can’t resist) since you are on WordPress is this link: http://andrewhyde.net/simple-permalink-trick/ . Depending on your hosting situation, your mileage may vary if there is not a .htaccess file in place.
