Downtown Denver Cheap Eats Ryan Hadley

December 10th, 2007

Being in IT, there are few things that make me happier than free food. The next best thing to free is cheap. I had quite the list of good cheap eats options for downtown Ann Arbor, which I miss greatly. I’ve been here in Denver for about 3 months now and am starting to get my list of cheap lunches closer to adequate. So here is what I have discovered so far.

  • Good Times
    • 16th Street Mall
    • Being from Michigan, I am shocked and confused as to why Good Times isn’t available everywhere. It’s yummy and cheap, I’d choose it over McDonalds every time. The cheap eats here is the “Old Fashioned Burger”, which before taxes is below $3. Their slogan for the burger is “When cash is thin, the taste isn’t.” Recently they’ve been running an amazing deal though, a Good Times Double Cheeseburger for $2.99 before taxes.
  • El Azteca
    • 16th and Tremont food court
    • Soft corn tacos for $1.39 a piece! Two will do for me, so that makes this lunch $2.78 + tax! I suggest the spicy pork, so yummy.
  • Fratelli Pizza & Panini
    • 16th and Tremont food court
    • They sell pizza slices at $2.75 for one topping and + 25 cents per additional topping. You can’t really find a one topping option though, so I always get a two topping slice (sausage + jalapeno). The slices are big, greasy and yummy. After all the taxes and whatnot it comes out to $3.51 per slice. But, you get their punch card and once you buy 6 slices the 7th one is free. That makes each slice about $3.01… after taxes!

The number one spoiler of cheap eats is pop (or do you call it soda here? I’ve heard it both ways). I don’t understand why fountain pop costs so much. Skip the pop and get water, it’s healthier anyway. And if the cheap eats didn’t fill you up enough, stop at the vending machine at the office and spend 25 cents on a healthy energy bar (that is, if your employer is as cool as mine). But really, one greasy slice of pizza, one greasy fast food hamburger, or two soft tacos should be plenty of calories for the day.

And please help me build out my list if you can! I need more lunch options below $5. Specific holes that need filled are: cheap falafel sandwich, cheap breakfast for lunch (2 eggs over easy with hash browns and white toast), and Bi Bim Bop.
